AMA Houston May Luncheon "Growing Share in a Combative Market"
Mark Henry, Manager US Fuels, Shell Oil
As the price of oil rises to record highs, oil company profits surge, but resentment grows among consumers. How does a major oil company market in such a volatile and hostile environment? How does it reinforce and differentiate its brand? Mark Henry's presentation, "Growing Share in a Combative Market," will focus on the marketing strategy Shell implemented in 2007 to grow market share in the rapidly changing retail gasoline market and highlight the challenges of product differentiation in a commoditizing "record high price" category.
Speaker
Mark Henry joined Shell in 1989 as a sales representative calling on Shell service stations in the northeast. After five years in sales management roles within retail he transferred to Shell's US headquarters in Houston, where he progressed through a series of strategy and planning assignments. In 1998 he became the Shell Brand Manager in the downstream Alliance formed by Shell and Texaco, and after Shell's buyout of those ventures in 2001, became Shell's US Fuels Manager. In 2005 he was assigned a global marketing role, from which he has recently returned, and now is focused on Fuels Marketing for both the US and Canada.

AMA Houston June Luncheon
"Blue Bell, a Hundred Year Old Brand"
In 2003, Blue Bell Creameries began planning for the celebration of the company's 100th anniversary, which would occur in 2007. Everyone involved recognized that planning for this anniversary would be the most massive marketing and celebratory effort the company had ever undertaken! Bill Weiss, public relations manager for Blue Bell, and Patricia Bernstein, president of Houston's Bernstein & Associates, which has provided Blue Bell with outside public relations assistance for over 20 years, will tell the story of how the 100th anniversary took shape. Bill will describe the various elements of the anniversary celebration, and Patricia will discuss some of the extensive amounts of media coverage that were generated, with the assistance of six subsidiary PR firms around the 17-state Blue Bell market area.
Speakers Patricia Bernstein

In 1983 she founded Bernstein & Associates, Inc., a full-service advertising, marketing and public relations firm. Bill Weiss
Born and raised in Washington County near Brenham, Mr. Weiss' first part-time job was at Blue Bell in cold storage and shipping. In 1997, Bill returned to Brenham as a media buyer for Blue Bell Advertising Associates, Blue Bell’s in-house advertising agency and served as Blue Bell’s United Way coordinator. In 2003, Bill was named Blue Bell’s corporate public relations manager. His responsibilities include media relations, employee communications, and corporate media training. He oversees the activities of several regional public relations firms contracted by Blue Bell in selected markets and now serves as the chairman of Blue Bell Creameries 100thAnniversary celebration.
